Driving innovation in health monitoring in Europe

The IRHIS (Interoperable Remote Health Innovation Brought to Scale) project is a European initiative aimed at transforming healthcare through the implementation of advanced remote digital health solutions. Co-funded by the European Union’s Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) instrument, IRHIS aims to establish the first demonstration chain of advanced remote healthcare in the EU, with a special focus on less developed regions.

The project is based on the need to facilitate the deployment of advanced digital technologies — such as wearable devices, smart sensors, and interoperable interfaces — in real healthcare ecosystems, supporting their integration into both clinical environments and patients’ homes. The main mission is to ensure that these innovations go beyond isolated prototypes or pilot programs and actually reach the market, are adopted by healthcare systems, and improve people’s quality of life.

An Internationally-Minded Project

The IRHIS consortium consists of 21 partners from different European regions with strong potential in the field of digital health and innovative solution implementation: Belgium, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Spain, Greece, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Romania.

These regions act as innovation laboratories, where real technologies will be deployed and their impact on both healthcare and social settings will be assessed. The consortium is coordinated by the I-VITA cluster (Lithuania).

Together, they form an alliance with the capacity to scale up solutions and build interregional networks that support impactful healthcare innovation.

Looking Ahead

Over the next three years, IRHIS will focus on developing and implementing technologies based on artificial intelligence, wearable devices, and remote monitoring to enhance patient care. Key focus areas include:

  • Musculoskeletal rehabilitation

  • Treatment of neurological disorders

  • Critical patient conditions (ICU)

Through the creation of three Interregional Demonstration Laboratories (DemoLabs), the project will collaborate with small and medium-sized enterprises to implement and scale up eight key technologies aimed at revolutionizing healthcare.
