Transforming Healthcare with AI and Big Data

Transforming Healthcare with AI and Big Data

The European project SYMPHONY aims to develop an open and orchestrated Information Technology (IT) ecosystem that facilitates the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data into healthcare. This initiative seeks to improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery by providing health professionals with advanced tools for clinical decision-making focused on specific diseases.

The project spans 36 months and is funded by the ITEA 4 program, with support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI).

The project is led by Philips Electronics Nederland BV and includes 24 partners from six countries: Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, and Turkey.

Challenges and Solutions in Healthcare

Modern healthcare faces numerous challenges, such as the growing demand for services, decreasing workforce capacity, and the need to adapt to new clinical and technological developments. SYMPHONY addresses these issues by creating a system that enables healthcare professionals to access comprehensive, real-time patient information, integrating all relevant data for diagnosis, treatment selection, and follow-up.

SYMPHONY does not aim for a one-size-fits-all solution but instead focuses on specific clinical workflows, developing tools tailored to diseases where AI can provide the greatest added value. This enables the design of a clinical support system that fits the practical reality of healthcare professionals, rather than imposing disruptive or overly generic solutions.

Project Innovations

The project’s main innovation strengths include:

  • Semantic interoperability: Facilitates the integration of data from diverse sources and systems, ensuring a coherent and meaningful understanding of medical information.

  • AI-powered clinical decision support: Implements AI algorithms to assist professionals in clinical decision-making, improving diagnostic and treatment precision and efficiency.

  • Automation of medical guidelines: Enables the automatic application of clinical protocols and guidelines, ensuring standardized, evidence-based medical care.

  • Meaningful clinical representation: Provides clear and understandable visualization of clinical data, enhancing its interpretation and practical use in medical settings.

SYMPHONY is expected to revolutionize healthcare delivery by allowing professionals to use a single, user-friendly IT system for their work. The integration of AI and Big Data into disease-specific clinical workflows will enhance care quality, reduce administrative burdens, and optimize available resources.
